Campus Security

With the number of violent crimes committed on campus rising, many colleges and universities have taken action to help prevent assaults on campus and furthermore make the safety of paying students a top priority. Many would consider the safety of a campus crucial while applying and enrolling into college, especially first year college students and their worrying parents. Unfortunately, nationwide the number of arrests committed on campus has risen over the past few decades especially over the past few years. Precautions have been made to ensure the safety of all students and faculty across campuses across the United States in order to prevent violence and ensure a safe, learning environment.

Since the tragic Columbine shooting in April 1999, thirty-four school shootings involving homicides have been reported. Sadly, many campuses do not publicly report the crimes committed on their campuses, blindly deceiving thousands of students willing to enroll in what some might say a dangerous environment. The main concern among young students is their choice to remain anonymous, which is not a common option among today’s public and private educational institutions. Commonly, many campus crimes go unreported due to the fact that the identity of the victim can and will be released to the public without care for the victim’s privacy. Assaults, rapes, and burglaries, are unfortunately not accounted for because of these issues. In order to prevent these issues, many colleges have provided financial awards for anyone who gives information of violence on campus.

Presented in class, the app Bucca-NEAR-u was an elaborate plan to effectively and discreetly call and notify campus security all within an app. The information would quickly alert campus police of any criminal or suspicious activity that concerns students residing on campus. With the notification surfacing in the form of an email, the app would allow whomever is contacting security to remain completely anonymous. Using global coordinates the app would allow campus police to know where any potential crime has taken place.

I believe that this app would be a great addition to the Christian Brothers University campus. With access being allowed to anyone visiting the campus, they would be allowed report, if any, crime on campus. Providing students with promised anonymity, the campus would progress to be an extremely safe environment. The app allows for quick, precise and accurate location services by the use of global coordinates sent simultaneously as the message directed towards campus police.
