Save A Kid Review

The Save a Kid presentation was about taking extra precautionary measures to protect and save children's lives. This included not letting the children wander off, become separated from you, or be forgotten or left in a car.

It gets very hot in Tennessee, especially during the summer months. Each year there are heat advisories and special news alerts sent out. On TV, the news stations tend to broadcast certain rules and precautions, such as make sure you stay hydrated, stay in cool environments, and do not leave your children or pets outside and in cars.

This is very important when it comes to babies and young children. They cannot think for themselves and depend on someone older and responsible to take care of them. Sometimes responsible adults can be forgetful and unintentionally may leave their children in the car.  How and why does this happen? The parent may think that it won't take that long for them to complete their errand and the child will be ok for that short period of time. The parent may actually forget. There might be a lot of things or the parent's mind, or they just did not think about it.

Children tend to wander. One minute they are right beside you, and the next they have vanished. They can get distracted easily and follow what ever has drawn their attention. When children wander, it may become difficult for you to find them, or for them to find their way back. Sometimes wandering children may end up in a dangerous environment, or a dangerous situation.

The Save a Kid organization presented an app and a website to help solve these major problems. They came up with a car seat sensor and a bracelet tracker. These two items are linked to your phone. The car seat sensor is attached to the child's car seat. When the parent or phone is further than a certain distance, the alarm goes off reminding you to take the child out of the car. The bracelet tracker is put on the child, and when the child is lost or has traveled more than maybe 30 feet away from you an alarm will go off. The bracelet also serves as a GPS and voice recorder, so you can track the child and hear what is happening in the environment.

Overall the idea and the approach was great. It is heavily phone based, or reliable on a phone connection. Everyone doesn't have a phone. There should be a device for those parents too, or someway they can connect to the child's device. Maybe include another bracelet for the parent. In conclusion, the presentation was good. I enjoyed it.
