Ash I vs. Ash II

In my opinion, Ash I and Ash II were not the same. I feel as though Ash II was not really even a human being. Ash I was a living, breathing human being with a mind, body and soul. He lived a normal had an actually was conceived in the womb unlike Ash II. What really stood out to me was the way that Ash II was programmed to gather all the information about Ash I and basically "act" how Ash I would normally act. Ash II could not successfully fulfill Martha's needs because certain components of Ash I were just was not there. When most people post on social media they rarely post sadness or anger. People normally only post positive images of their lives. The same goes for emails, personally most of my emails are professional and are definitely not how I would talk to my significant other on a daily basis. What I'm saying here is that Ash II could not fully be Ash I because he couldn't embody Ash I fully because certain emotions he did not portray on social media, text or through emails.
I also found the part where Martha had sex with Ash II very disturbing. She basically had sex with a "thing" since Ash II was not really human, just a human-like robot. When we discussed this part in class a question came to mind. If Ash II couldn't bleed, could it ejaculate? I don't know if anyone else asked this question but I'm mighty curious if the makers of this android put that much thought into it. Martha did claim that the sex was much better but with her saying that I would say that that situation made Ash II even more different than Ash I.
I do not think that Martha made the right decision when it came to getting Ash II. Texting and talking to Ash II on the phone had already gone too far. Having this thing that looks and kind of acts like Ash I is just weird, disturbing, and actually kind of scary. What if Ash II would have glitched and turned on her and tried to kill her or something. Even though it did not those are the thoughts that would have gone through my head. Ash I and Ash II are just completely different in my opinion just because of the fact that Ash I was a human being and Ash II was an android.

I agree with the fact that Martha actually participating in sex with Ash 2 was quite disturbing. I believe that she may have wanted Ash 2 to be a real person and started to make herself believe it for a time. As you said, Ash 2 could not fulfill all of Martha's needs because they are simply not the same person.

Although Ash 2 is not capable of replicating physical aspects of a human that are not built into him (such as blood), He showed near the end that he is able to "show" human emotion, even if he can't feel it.
Over time, he might be able to fill in the gaps in Ash's personality that weren't shown in social media.

"Ash I was a living, breathing human being with a mind, body and soul." I think this is not necessarily what defines the difference between Ash I and Ash II. Ash II definitely had a mind and body of a sort, even if they were manufactured rather than organic. Whether or not Ash II had a soul is debatable. Regarding the matter of free will, Ash II acted under his own power, but according to his programming. One could say that this is what makes him not a real person, but as Dr. Johnson mentioned in class, do we not all follow programming of a sort? How is the way we were raised, or otherwise learned to behave in the world, any different than computer software?

Among the differences between Ash I and Ash II is Ash II's lack of personal interest in anything - he does as he believes he is supposed to, not how he wishes to for his own personal enjoyment or benefit.

Another difference is, as you mention, his perfection; he is as Ash I wanted to be perceived, not as Ash I actually was. Martha found him to be so disturbing partly because his perfection made him too different from Ash I, as she had loved him for who he was, imperfections included. Perhaps one of the main differences between android and human is imperfection.

I agree that Ash and Ash 2 are not the same; their outward appearance and a parts of their personality might be the same, but that doesn't make one a replacement for the other. Like you, I don't believe that Ash 2 had a soul like Ash because what is your soul... Its like your "inward self identity" like your desires, emotions, and personality. These are things that Ash 2 doesn't have and can't have; he might be able to mimic them but they will never be his, so I have to agree that they are not the same. I also have to agree with you that some parts of the film were a little disturbing, mainly the fact that she had sex and had an emotional connection with a "thing" that she knew really wasn't Ash.
