Of course, what Angela did was far from honest. After all, the entire purpose of the elaborate set up was to deceive Nev and keep him ignorant to the truth of the situation. Yes, it is easy to understand why Angela did what she did since her actual life was not exactly ideal. She wanted to escape from it by any means necessary without physically escaping it as in bailing on her family. Undoubtedly, Angela falsely claiming to Nev that she had uterine cancer was an act that drained some sympathy out of the audience of the documentary. While what Angela did was wrong and somewhat creepy, it is not as though I can harshly blame her for everything and wish the worst upon her. Yet, I am not excusing her actions by any means. However, I am saying that she should not be allocated one hundred percent of the blame.
Beyond a shadow of a doubt, if one had to pick who the victim in this situation was, the answer would undoubtedly be "Nev". It is not as though he invited this situation upon himself, and he ended up handling it remarkably well given the circumstances. However, Nev should have been more skeptical from the very beginning. The complex web of lies from Angela was quite impressive, but the web of lies stayed intact for longer than they probably should have thanks to Nev's lack of skepticism and abundance of trust. That is the only reason why I say that a little bit of the blame for the entirety of the catfishing situation should go on Nev.
Furthermore, this is less of a critique of Nev in particular and more of a critique of people in general. I believe that every situation in life should be approached with at least a bit of skepticism in mind. If something seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is. Also, the application of skepticism when it comes to interactions with other people, specifically their intentions and motivations, is important. It seems like this might help with less people getting hurt one way or another.
On a related note, I am not saying that people should never trust anybody. However, I am saying that being a little skeptical seldom harms an individual and can certainly be of benefit. This feeds into the idea of being as selective as possible when it comes to trusting people with important things, whether that be highly sensitive information or one's heart.

I don't know Mathew I feel like Nev is not that much of a victim other than the fact he was lied to online. He brought a lot of it on himself. His life in general is pretty great in all honesty. He gets to travel the country with his job with his friends and that does not seem too bad.
Is Nev a victim as in is that the word that describes him best? Of course not. I am only saying he is a victim in a situation in which you have to decide whether Angela or Nev is a victim in the catfishing situation.
