Should I Really Feel Pity For Angela?

On the documentary Catfish, Nev was documented finding a family online and slowly realized he was being catfished. The person who was catfishing him was a woman named Angela. As you think about it, it was amazing how elaborate Angela's lie was. She had to have more than ten Facebook accounts, keep up with all of these Facebook accounts, and two phones. Even when she was practically caught, she still had the audacity to keep up with her lie. However, we find out that Angela had a pretty mediocre life. She had to take care of two disabled children, she had a pretty mediocre husband, and she had a pretty mediocre artistic career. She wanted to have the life she dreamed of having when she was younger. She was a pretty pathetic woman, but this is no excuse.

When you have such an elaborate lie, you have to have spend most of your time and energy on keeping up this false persona. You don't just go to such an extent and not think deeply about how your actions may effect the other person. She didn't care what the other person would feel when he found out it was a lie. Furthermore, she didn't care about how her husband and children would've felt. She only cared about making herself feel special and happy. She was a selfish woman in that aspect. If Nev was doing this to her, I'm sure she would've broken down crying.

Should we give her a pass because of her sad situation? I think not. A lot of things in people's lives are in people's control. We don't know for sure about everything, but she is the master of her own fate. She said in the video that she squandered her talent and that can be true. She could have not worked hard enough, or she just didn't realize that maybe she needed to have chosen another life plan. She may be miserable, but it seems like it was her own fault. Instead of trying to change herself, she made a fictional self that was the "perfect" her. What seems weird, though, is the relationship between her and Nev. What was his purpose in her life? I think that he was was there to help her believe her lies were real for an instance and be the man she wished she would have gotten. Overall, she is a sad and miserable woman but she is far from pitiable.

I believe that it is harder to sympathize with her based off of her continued lying, but I do not think that this should draw away from how sad this situation actually is. The only reason I could still bring myself to sympathize with her was because she was handling her harsh reality in a very unhealthy way. Just the fact that she made so many accounts and made them all interact makes it a sad thing.
