Something Smells Fishy

Lets be honest, we all knew how the film "Catfish" was going to turn out right from the beginning.  We have all heard the term by now and my question is who is to blame, the catfish or the one who got fooled.  For me, I can see it being both the catfish's fault as well as the one who was tricked into believe all of those crazy lies.

I am no fan of catfish; I think that it is deceptive and not being true to who you are by trying to disguise yourself as someone you're defiantly not.  I do think that Nev is kind of to blame as well.  As we were watching the film, I was taken back by the fact that Nev believed all the bull shit that Angela kept telling him; like, no one is that interesting and has that many interesting stories.  If it was me, I kind of think that I would have take everything with a grain of salt especially when someone who I have never really ever met tells me story after story of how their life is so awesome.  We all know that one guy or girl that over exaggerates stories and that feeling you get when you realize that her/she is adding in details to make them seem more interesting.    It one of those type of experiences that makes you always question what they say, and I don't see how Nev didn't eventually catch on.

On the other hand, there still is the catfish, Angela and she is also to blame. I honestly think that there was something mentally wrong with her; it takes a special kind of person to be able to fabricate ten or more people out of thin air and keep them up to a point where it is still believable.  It took a lot of work to keep up with persona's of Abby, Angela, her husband, and many others. To me it shows that deliberate thought went into creating the illusion and wasn't something that she just put together on the spot, and that's where I think that she took it too far.  She could change from person to person almost instantly, not really caring about the consequences and how someone could get hurt.

Overall, I think the Internet has allowed us to live out lives that we otherwise would not be able to live. It lets us be who we want be, say want we want say, and do what we want to do, and in some way it has been a downfall. Because of the Internet we are able to do all these things without worrying about the consequences of our decisions. It disconnects us from actual conversation and dialog and opens up the possibilities for those people like catfish to take advantage of us in order to gain some form of pleasure. I believe that there is one thing that we can take away from "Catfish" and that is don't take everything at face value; sometimes if thing seem to good to be true, they usually are.

You are right. it is wrong to show people something fake. I do not think that media has been completely bad. Years ago we would not be able to communicate with people that were in a different state unless it was through a letter. It is amazing that now you can start friendships in an instant. Although there are a lot of catfish online I also think there are catfish in real life as well, not only in media.

I agree with you on the statement " if it's to good to be true, it's not". However, I believe Yaniv/Nev simply thought it was true because the whole "family" was involved. There was Angela "herself", Megan, the Dad, the cousin, the friend, etc. Like you said, it was very well planned out, and maybe that's why he fell for it, don't you think?
