In general,
The theme that I could see in Catfish documentary was the idea of honesty within the technological era. Right now, it is easier than ever to be able to impersonate someone because of technology. The film made me question how much honesty and dishonesty ee expect from social media. We want people to tell the truth about their personalities, back stories, and description but we rarely share things on social media that are not something worth congratulating or flattering of ourselves in some way. Because of that I think that in a way all of us are being dishonest with the public in the sense that very few of us share just as many mundane parts of their lives as they do the exciting ones. For those who are intentionally Catfishing and impersonate others online, there does not seem to be many rules set in place for them to face the consequences of their actions. The only that I could think of for legal ramifications would be slander of the person's photos and information that they are using, identity theft, and possibly saying that agreements that were under false pretenses. Can any of you think of any others? Also, do you think that the number of crimes we have related to Catfishing are enough?
About Angela
Many people have mixed emotions about Angela after Catfish, so e feel sympathy about her actual situation while others feel like she should be seen more punitively. I think Angela knew exactly what she was doing, and that once she was caught she saw it as an opportunity that she could also exploit. She manipulated and deceived Yaniv with multiple fake accounts and personalities online to gain his trust and love. Once Niv told her that she was caught, she had the chance to tell the truth and explain her actions. Instead of this she decides to continuously lie, not only to Niv but also to the world by stating after the documentary that she has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Angela is not trying to tell the truth, she wishes to continue to lie and deceive that public for her own amusement and because she finally gaining attention from the public that she always craved. People are the choices that they make and Angela seemed to only make the choices that would create attention for herself. I think the only reason that she chose to take care of her husband's handicap sons was because she thought that in return she would be praised and given positive attention. We all want to be acknowledged from time to time, yet some are willing to go to extreme lengths to ensure they will be seen and noticed. That is who Angela is, not a lonely, sad woman stuck in servitude as some may portray her.
