Catfish: The Phenomenon

Catfishing is an interesting phenomenon where someone can pretend to be someone they're not using Facebook or other social media to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online romances. Over the last decade it has become so common for people to be "catfished" that a documentary and tv show was made to document people who are experiencing it.

Social Media has become a place where people can pretend to be someone they're not. Like we talked about in class where the question is asked, "are you really yourself on social media?" Honestly, you can be anyone you want to be. You can display fragments of yourself or even false characteristics about yourself on social media to pretend you're someone you're not. In the film "Be Right Back," it was about the guy who passed away and his girlfriend was given a clone of him that was created based off of his social media accounts. She then realized he wasn't like the "living" version of her boyfriend. It goes hand-in-hand with catfishing. No one really knows if who they are talking to on social media is being genuine and really being themselves. Its really a scary thing because people get fooled really easily and it can put them in bad situations. For example, what if the person you are being catfished by is a murderer or a crazy person and then you go meet up with them... you're screwed basically. People should go back to the old fashioned way of meeting people and actually meet someone in person and not through a phone or computer.

All in all, the lesson people should learn through the show and the phenomenon "Catfish," is that you can't trust people online that you have never met in person because they can pretend to be anyone they want to be. Social Media has just gone too far with how people are abusing it it today's time.
