False Advertising

This week’s episode was the first episode of a now popular series named “Catfish”. This episode was filmed with a male named Nev as the main character. He and his friend Rel filmed the day to day relationship that was beginning to form, with who they thought was Angela, Abby, and Megan. Angela was the mother of older sister Megan, and younger sister Abby who was made out to be a very talented and somewhat famous painter at such an early age. This family communicates with Nev through Facebook and later phone calls and texts. As the days go on Nev begins to establish emotions with Megan through text (but never phone calls).  They become very close and exchange gifts via mail very often mostly including “Abby’s” paintings. While filming earlier on in the episode, Nev says they must be awesome just by hearing how they handle the situations on the phone; which they may or may not have been going through. The emotions continue to rise for one another which for me is hard for me to understand based on the fact that they haven’t seen one another in person yet. They next move to calling each other hot and even exchanging sexual like texts between one another. Not to mention Nev thinks he is doing so with the profile pictures that Angela has set on her profiles which are entirely different.

For someone to create such a complex scheme only shows me that they deep down are not happy with what their life has amounted too and/or they have issues. Angela took the time to create fake profiles for everyone around her and even fake accounts to make it look like they had friends. This may be her way of creating a better life for herself and just trying to ride it out for as long as possible. I believe she had too much time on her hands. Even so, she had to know that one day the truth would come out. Either way, this is morally wrong. She also transferred some, if not more of her pain onto Nev. She gave him false hope that he was creating a relationship with a beautiful girl and a happy family; which was for the most part all false. Though this is not Nev’s fault, I believe he was too gullible in letting someone distract him from the truth so easily. I believe cases like this will sway many people even from the online dating cites for instance. These days the truth can be so easily deceived, and anyone can literally make themselves out to be anything.

Jared,
I completely agree that Angela did this because she was not happy in her life. I feel that she was not able to chase her dreams, so she created these profiles and lived through them. I think you raised an interesting point that she pushed her pain onto Nev and gave him false hope. I, too believe that Nev was too gullible. These "catfish" cases are becoming more and more common and it is sad to see that so many people are affected by them.
