Who's to Blame?
In the film, Catfish, Nev Schulman develops a business relationship with a young painter, Abby. He would send her pictures to paint, and she would paint them and send Nev the paintings. At first, the situation seems very innocent, but as the film progresses, it becomes a bit out of control. Nev, soon, finds himself creating or building relationships with Abby's mother, Angela, and with Abby's older sister, Megan; Nev's bond with Megan initially starts as a friendship on Facebook, but as time goes on, it progresses to something more. They begin having phone conversations as well as exchanging text messages. Megan defines herself as a musician and a dancer. She tells Nev that she did not live with her mom, but on a farm close to her mom in Ishpeming, Michigan. One night, while Nev is with his brother and a friend, they decide to play a game with Megan; they give Megan a song that they want her to sing; they tell her to record it and send it to them. After a few listens and a few google searches, they soon find that the recordings she sent were recordings of other people; On top of that, when looking up the information about a gallery Abby was opening, Nev finds that the building had not been bought. Later in the film, Nev and his group decide to go to Ishpeming, Michigan to surprise Megan at Sunday breakfast at her mom's house. Once they arrive, they decide to do a drive by of the farm that Megan claims to be at. When they pull up to the farm, they soon find that she is not there, nor has she ever been because there was mail still in the mailbox from a long time ago. That night, Nev decides to share some explicit, sexual messages exchanged between him and Megan. The next morning, Nev and his crew go to Angela's house and meet her husband, Vince, and her stepsons who are handicapped, and somehow, Angela brings up that she has cancer. When they ask Angela about Abby, she expresses that she is at a beach house with her friend. They go to see Abby, and Nev asks her friend, Lauren, if Abby paints a lot. Her friend literally spills the beans and tells Nev that Abby does not paint, but her mom, Angela, paints a lot. When talking to Abby about painting, Nev can clearly tell that she did not paint the pictures that were sent to him; Nev also asks Abby about her sister, Megan, and Abby basically says that she never sees her around. After getting confirmation, Nev finally confronts Angela about her portraying to be Megan, and she tells him that her older daughter is real, but she is at a rehabilitation center, and that the girl in the pictures is a family friend. We soon find out that her response for creating about 10 different fake Facebook profiles, including that of Megan, is because she has a really tough life, and she just wanted to escape and be someone else. At this point, I understand that her life is hard, but at the same time, she chose that life for herself. We learned, a bit earlier, Vince's sons came from a previous marriage. If Angela and Vince had discussed marriage before their actual commitment, she, ultimately, had to weigh in that caring for handicapped children requires a lot of work, so I really don't feel sorry for her. She really should have thought about that before marrying Vince. I'm not saying that she should have been selfish, but at the same time, if she knew that she wanted to do other things with her life, I feel as though she should have done all of those things before making such a huge commitment to Vince and his two handicapped sons. I hate that she never seems to take responsibility for her own actions; she likes to blame everyone else for the way her life is when, in actually, no one makes you do anything you don't want to do! You are in control of your own life! She is essentially to blame for her life turning out the way it did. I also hate that when she was trying to "tell the truth" she was STILL LYING! She did not have cancer! Megan was not in a rehab facility! She did not know the girl in photos! That was the perfect time to come completely clean about everything and she still lied. Also, I kind of feel like she was basically cheating on her husband considering the content of the text messages she was sending to Nev. I don't know; Do you feel as though she was technically cheating on her husband? Do you feel any type of sympathy or remorse for her?
