The film “Catfish” was not like any other documentaries I have seen before. Since our generation is familiar with what “Catfishing” is, the movie seemed predictable. However, the film continued to keep me interested through. The film was able to keep me engaged because of the mysterious plot. The film producers did an excellent job developing the film because it kept us, the audience, wondering how much was true and kept us asking questions about the different situations Nev was facing. In addition to the mystery feel of the movie, I also felt moments of suspense, which is not typically what I excepted in a documentary film. Since the film was majority raw material and not overly produced it gave a feeling like we, the viewers, were there with Nev’s crew solving the mystery surrounding Megan and her family. Catfish is a documentary film about a cyber relationship between a New York photographer and a family from Ishpeming, Michigan. Nev, the photographer, has mutual friendship with Abby, an 8-year-old painter. Their relationship consists of exchanging photographs for paintings. As the friendship between Abby and Nev progresses, Nev begins to develop a friendship with Abby’s family. Nev continues to becomes friends with Abby’s family members on Facebook. Nev casually begins talking with Abby’s mother, named Angela, and soon starts to talk to "Megan", the older sister of Abby. Nev becomes continues to develop his relationship with Megan. Nev and Megan continue to talk on the phone, and send messages between each other, while still receiving paintings from Abby. Nev becomes suspicious of Megan and her family when Megan begins to send him songs that are stolen from other artists online after claiming they were hers. This discovery and suspicion leads Nev, his brother, and friend to track down the supposed family to discover who they really are. This leads them to a surprising discovery that Angela has been deceiving Nev with many fabrications and lies.

            After watching the film, I can understand why Nev was deceived with all the fabrications and lied made up by Angela. During that time, it was not very common for people to make up false identities on the internet. Because of the public’s exposure to this film and the raising popularity of the word “catfish” many people now are educated and are aware that some people are not truly who they are online.
