Catfishing in Video Games
I play a lot of video games and often when you cannot hear the voice of who you are playing against people will repeatedly pretend to be someone they are not and basically when I say that I mean they will pretend to be a girl gamer when they are actually a guy. Why do they do this you say , I say because they are most likely some loser sitting behind their computer looking for attention and the easiest way to gain attention when playing an online multiplayer video game is to pretend that you are a girl and a thousand guys will come flocking to you everyone will want to play with you, everyone will want to talk to you and as long as you can pretend to be a girl you will typically garner a lot of attention. At the same time attempting to catfish people in an online game can run into problems such as if you don't keep acting like a girl people will get suspicious also most people when they find out you are a girl will start asking for pictures they will also want you to get onto voice applications such as Teamspeak 3 or Discord and try to get you to talk to them so keeping up the appearance of being a girl can be quite taxing if you do not do these things because than people will stop believing you unless they are exceptionally gullible. Being a gamer I can't say I haven't pretended to be a girl over the internet at least once and it can be quite entertaining if you are willing to put in the effort to fool people. Now to compare this to the film that we watched a lot more goes into catfishing the way that Angela did it she actually built characters to make the people in her catfish seem real and she changed many different details about her life to make it more interesting and to make it easier for Nev to fall into her trap. One of the things I believe that made him fall for it first was the fact that he was receiving paintings from a tons of paintings from a supposedly famous little girl named Abby who was Angela's daughter. Also practically everyone that was in her characters on Facebook wasn't even a picture of the actual person which she used to try to make the characters look more appealing because she was definitely not good looking like Angela made it seem on Facebook.

This is so true! I'm an Xbox gamer and I get a lot of party and game invites JUST because I'm a girl. I rarely join parties unless they are close friends, so people often troll me or beg to hear my voice to confirm I'm a girl. I was recently in a party with what I thought was girl, but turned out to be a guy! It was so strange. Catfishing is so prominent in video games and we never realize it. Very good point you brought up! :)
