I thought the film "Be Right Back" was an interesting
film to watch. Something that I found very ironic in the film was that Martha
didn't really use technology compared to Ash. Which she would get onto too
saying stuff such as "Just checking your still solid, you keep vanishing
down there" talking about Ash's phone.
Ironically when Ash died she turned too
technology to help get over her grieve of Ash's death. It started simple which
at first was just chatting with a bot that would respond as if it was actually
Ash. Then she decided to take it a little farther having the bot being able to
call her and being able to have a conversation with one another, as if she was
really having a conversation with Ash. He sounded exactly and responded the
same way Ash. Which I thought was somewhat creepy but sort of awesome at the
same time. During this stage, however she started to get dependent of the phone
and its technology. Two prove my point I’ll give you two examples such as, when
she went on the hike she talked to the Ash bot in the phone the whole way on
the hike, she would even ignore her calls in order to not stop talking to Ash
bot. There was also a time when she accidentally dropped the phone and she
started crying and even started to break down, as she could no longer talk to
the Ash bot since the phone had broken. That is when you noticed more than ever
how she was depending on that technology to not grieve.
As if talking to a deceased wasn't good
enough she decided to go the extra mile, and into the next stage. This is when
I think she went too far with it. She ended up getting a robot that looked exactly
like Ash. This robot became Ash 2.0 as it looked exactly like Ash did and spoke
as Ash did as well, sort of like a clone of Ash. Ash 2.0 at first you thought
of him as an Ash clone. However as the film went on we as well as Martha could
tell it was not exactly Ash. As he would do things such as do everything she
commanded. Near the end of the film, we saw Ash 2.0 speaking for himself and
not as something that the real Ash would say. In the end, I feel Ash 2.0 became
himself and not a replica of Ash. I think Martha accepted that which is why she
did not make him jump off the cliff and instead had sort of a divorce. Which is
why Ash 2.0 is in the basement and gets to see the daughter in the
weekends.
