In Catfish, we see the story of Yaniv, a New York who develops a relationship with Abby. Abby is a young girl who paints. (side note: I thought it was creepy that a grown man was friends with a little girl that he met on the internet.) He develops a relationship, not only with Abby but with her entire family. Later on, he starts an online/long distance relationship with Megan, Angela’s daughter, and Abby’s sister. He soon realizes that he has been lied to, so he decides to visit Abby and his family. When he arrives, he then confirms his doubts that they were all lies. Abby doesn’t paint. Angela does not look like her profile pictures and she is also Megan. How can someone lie like that? She created so many Facebook account and had multiple phone lines to keep up her act.
I felt sorry for her. Especially when she said, “they are all parts of me, what I always wanted to be, and will never be”, as she was referring to the multiple people she had created.
We all lie on social media, but not to the level Angela did. If you were to take someone’s social media pages and compare them to the real person, they are going to be very different. We tend to portray our lives as more interesting than they really are. Although this was somewhat of an innocent case, in the reality show Catfish, we see that in some cases there is an evil motive behind it. I have seen several episodes where people catfish someone for revenge or just for fun.
