Becoming Numb to Technological Advances
In the series, " Black Mirror", the episode, "Be Right Back", shows how society has become so numb to technological advances that it could possibly make the world lose its sense of independency. In the episode, the character Martha is devastated when her partner Ash is killed in a road accident. At the funeral, one of her friends suggest that she uses this new form of technology that lets her communicate with her deceased loved one, Ash, using all his former online communication. At first Martha is appalled and does not want to give it a try. One day Martha gets a message from Ash, and she realizes Sarah, the lady that suggested it, has signed her up for the service. At first, Martha wants nothing to do with the conversations taking place through emails, but when she gets the news she's pregnant she begins to change her initial thought. The more and more Martha uses the service, the more she begins to feel an emotional connection with the device. Ash2, the computer service, suggest that Martha tries an experimental 'next level' service. A package is delivered to Martha's house and inside is a android form of the original Ash. When Martha opens the box, she shows an example of the uncanny valley effect, as she feels unease by this humanlike robotic figure. After time is spent with Ash2, she becomes so accustomed with this piece of strange technology that she forgets to feel any type of grief for her 'real' deceased husband.
This form of technological advance shows how people can become unware of things and emotions going on in their life. This example shows how they lose a sense of independency and become more dependent of the form of technology for any type of assistance. Of course, in todays society we can not order a humanlike robot, but their are different types of technology today that play the same role. For example, the common 'cellphone' loses people's sense of indecency. People can not even have a simple conversation without the distractions of cellphone notifications. Another example of this scenario, would be how parents take home their work on their laptops becoming unaware of how they do not spend quality family time with their kids. This shows how technology is taking over a part of our lives and how society has become so acclimated to such an issue.

I liked how you connected the film to what we learned in class, the uncanny valley. I also agree with technology has allowed for humans to lose their independece, and it is scary.
I agree that technology causes constant distractions in everyday life.
