Can criminals be rehabilitated?

There's old sayings that say, "You do the crime, you do the time" or "The punishment fits the crime." I firmly agree with both of those sayings. However, I do believe that our criminal justice system has a lot of issues and could be massively improved. We discussed in class whether or not criminals could be rehabilitated and then become able to join society again but, I believe this is possible to an extent.

Crimes such as possession or intake of illegal drugs definitely deserve jail time but, not to the extent that is given in most cases. Due to the fact that there are prisons who make money off of the amount of prisoners they receive, this makes them eager to put as many prisoners as they can in these jails for as long as possible. People who commit these kinds of crimes need to do their jail time but also receive help in jail that aids them in becoming clean and helping them to better themselves so they can rejoin society when their sentence is up. On the other hand, crimes like murder deserve a much different experience. I believe these people cannot be rehabilitated, nor do they deserve to helped in becoming rehabilitated. This type of crime is inhumane in itself, therefore punishments such as solitary confinement should be acceptable. These kinds of criminals can't and shouldn't be rehabilitated because first and foremost they do not deserve to have another chance to rejoin society and not only that but, how can anyone know for sure that they are "rehabilitated" and won't go out and commit murder again.

All in all, there are certain types of crimes that are so unacceptable that these criminals shouldn't get a second chance. But, there are crimes such drug crimes where people do their time and then get a second chance to live their lives the way they should.
