For Justice or For Fun

In the episode "White Bear," a woman, Victoria, was punished for a crime that she helped commit in a very unusual way. Victoria and her fiancé were both punished for the death and kidnapping of a young girl. Victoria filmed the crime, including the torture the girl endured and her murder. While in jail, Victoria's fiancé committed suicide and many agreed that he had escaped his punishment. To keep the same thing from happening with Victoria, she was forced to endure a day full of pain and suffering over and over and over again. In addition, people also video taped her and were not allowed to have contact with her,
Although there are many different opinions of what justice is, one thing that is always included in its definition is morality. With this being said, what is just or unjust when it comes to punishing criminals? Was Victoria getting the punishment she deserved or was she being mentally tortured for entertainment? Everyday her memory was erased and she was forced to relive the same horrible day over and over again. She was tortured and filmed everyday just as the girl was. It can be inferred that the purpose of Victoria's punishment was for her to experience the pain that she caused. Instead of going through the pain each day and then having to experience it, she went through each horrible day as if its the first time that she's experienced it. The punishment would've been more effective if she could remember the torment, just as the girl did.
Overall, it seems as if Victoria's punishment was more for the viewer and less for her. When people are hired to take the position of onlookers, they are given three rules. The first two are "no talking" and "keep your distance." These are enforced to trick Victoria into thinking that the onlookers are entranced by the programs on their phones and that the only thing they are able to do is film. The last rule is "enjoy yourself." What kind of world would we live in if it were acceptable to film this woman's pain and terror as she's afraid for her life? It's terrifying that the general public would find joy in this and be in agreement that it's fun. The audience laughed at her and taunted her the entire time. It's frightening that no one felt bad for her or even got out of character as she screamed for help.
It has become increasingly common that people film, share, and document everything that happens. What makes this even more terrifying is that this could one day become our reality.

I agree with your opinion that the White Bear Justice Park was more for the viewer and less for Victoria. I think Victoria would have learned her lesson after being tortured once, but that would not have made a lot of money. I think the White Bear Justice Park is completely for the pleasure of the audience and does not serve the purpose to punish.

I agree, I think the scariest part is the fact that this could happen in our society. It most likely would be used as a deterrence method to lower crime, but end up being used to make money. I found it disturbing that people would stream it on their phone and show it to their kids. Teaching the kids not to be able to tell right from wrong.
