Gone Fishing.....Nevermind

The movie, Catfish, was about a man, Nev, unconsciously searching for love. He and his friends were photographers and film makers. Nev's friends decided to make him the subject of a film and document his quest for love. It all began with Abby. Abby was an 8 year old girl who lived in Michigan with her parents. She was a famous painter, or so we thought.  Abby saw one of Nev's photos and mailed him a painting of it. Nev and 8 year old Abby became Facebook friends. This happened during the time when Facebook was fairly new. Because Nev and Abby were Facebook friends, Nev was exposed to Abby's family. Abby's family consisted of herself, her mother, Angela, her father, Vince, and her older sister, Megan. Nev started communicating with Megan on Facebook, and talking to her on the phone. Megan was musical. She played instruments and sang, or so we thought. Nev and Megan eventually fell in love. However, Megan wasn't Megan! Angela was Megan, and everybody else at that matter. The moral of the movie was that Abby did not paint, Angela did. Also, Angela lied about nearly everything and pretended to be everyone. This included a fake circle of friends and family members, and different conversation voices. What Angela did was completely wrong. It all seemed realistic and convincing, at first, but everything is not what it seems.

Technology was terribly abused for the benefit of a lonely woman. Since 2008, it has advanced tremendously. Facebook is still around, and so are other newer social media platforms, such as Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram. People can easily become careless and post a lot of important information online. This includes simple innocent pictures. There are cruel people in the world who will do crazy things, such as take your identity, and use it as their own. It sucks, but other than making accounts private and being extremely careful of who you are friends with, there is nothing we can really do about it. Today's world is too dependent on technology. Technology helps us create a fictional ideal world where we are able to continuously pretend.

Angela's husband, Vince, didn't seem to be knowledgeable of what was happening, but he did say something of importance. He created the term, or analogy, "catfish". According to Vince, "There are people in the world who keep others on their toes, always guessing and thinking, like a catfish."

It is important to be aware, and cautious. Something seemingly harmless can turn into something dangerous in the blink of an eye.

I agree that technology was abused and has created a society that forces us to always watch for those red flags and be cautious so we won't be catfished

Stacy, I do agree with you that technology has created a society that is harmful in many respects. However, I believe that technology as a whole has brought us a long way in respects to convenience, coneectedness, intimacy in the social life, respectfulness, and in integrity. With that said, technology has allowed us as a social community serve those who needed it most: people with social problems. Facebook has done everything from allowing us to stay connected with our friends to reuniting long lost kinships. Thus, I believe technology is ultimately beneficial to our society as a whole.
