Is it Just?

Justice is fairness, equality, retribution, and reconciliation. There is a difference between torture and Justice. With justice there is an invisible line that should not be crossed. On the tv series Black Mirror season 2 episode 2 also called "White Bear", was a prime example of how unjust America can become. In White Bear the main character Victoria was convicted of kidnapping and murder. There are many aspects that go into a trial when convicting someone of kidnapping and murder, such as what was there mental state, were they being manipulated, or were they in the right mind set.

The true criminal in the movie was her fiance. All of the flashbacks she had during the show were in negative light of him. At the beginning of the show her Victoria had a flash back to her fiance when the actor was pretending to kill the man. Victoria and the child seemed very accustomed to each other. The little girl seemed to always be smiling and be very happy. When Victoria had a flashback to the crime scene where the little girl was killed, she had an extremely upset look on her face, while her fiance seemed to be smiling at the fire. Where as in her flashbacks she only seemed to be kind to the little girl. Victoria did not get out of the car in her visions, when the court said she did. Due to this evidence and what she said at the end of the movie I do believe that she was manipulated into doing what ever her fiance told her to do.  At the end of the show she learned that her fiance killed the little girl and later hung himself. This is a red flag to me because he seemed to always need to have the power in every situation and that was his way of getting the power back.

I believe that Victoria got the wrong punishment. She should have been charged with 2nd degree murder along with kidnapping. 2nd degree murder because she was at the crime scene when it happened, and kidnapping because she took a child. A better punishment would have been anywhere from 11-45 years in prison depending on how bad the situation was. Why torture somebody who clearly does not feel any hatred, but feels public humiliation, is reminded of her past, and is scared to death everyday. That is not good it is unhealthy. The point of a punishment is to deter a person so they will not commit a crime also allowing them to conform to society.

I agree that maybe her boyfriends manipulated her into being an accomplice, but since the show doesn't state that she was forced to partake in the murder then I am more prone to believe that she at any moment could've said, "No I don't want to be a part of this" and called the cops on him because she wanted to save the child. But because she didn't and just made a video without doing absolutely anything to try and stop him for torturing a defenseless child then I think she got a fair punishment.
