The Purge Park

In this week's short film, "The White Bear," the main character, Victoria, is reliving a nightmare everyday. First she wakes up confused and has no idea where she is. Then, she walks outside and notices hoards of people silently watching and filming her, but the onlookers won't say anything and won't help her. Suddenly, a man with a mask gets out of a car with a shotgun and starts chasing her. She runs away as fast as she can and soon runs into a couple at a gas station who tries to help her find safety. The man gets shot by the masked kill and the lady continues to help and they run away. The lady then explains to Victoria what is supposedly going on. To sum it up, she says there is something like a hypnosis that overcomes people to just record everything and watch what happens without reacting or helping people. Like zombies, basically. This thing is like a virus which is transmitted through television, computer, and phone monitors. Then there are the strong people who have used this hypnosis to their advantage and became the ones in control who scare and torture the weak people. Similarly, I'd say it is something like a technological apocalypse from the way she describes it. Victoria then freaks out and starts yelling at the onlookers. After that, then 2 more people in masks start chasing them and they almost get hit by a car, but the man driving then picks them up and takes them to his "safe place" which is the woods. They eat and talk when they get there, but soon realize the man isn't one of the good people. He double crossed them. Suddenly, he took out his shotgun and walked them down further into the woods where you see tons of dead bodies and what looks like people who were crucified like on a cross. The girl runs off while Victoria is left there while the man is preparing to torture her. The girl comes back for her bag and shoots the man with his gun and helps Victoria escape again. They both stole his van and drove to the place where it all started called White Bear in order to burn down the control room which is believed to stop the hypnosis of the people. They get there and a major plot twist then occurs. The control room then turns into a stage and there are people clapping and yelling in the audience. Suddenly, all the major characters strapped Victoria to a chair. Victoria is left very confused. It is then revealed that she kidnapped, tortured, and killed a little girl named Jemima with her fiance. Throughout, Victoria filmed all of this on camera, all the suffering the child went through. Victoria was found guilty and this is her punishment. At the end of each day, Victoria's memory is erased and she has to relive this nightmare every day. It is held within a place called White Bear Justice Park. She is supposed to feel exactly how she made that little girl feel, helpless and scared. Is this a proper way to punish though? I believe that it is not a very efficient if they wipe her memory every time. I think they should do it once and not wipe her memory then send her to jail. That way she can remember exactly how that little girl felt because of her. The justice park also brought in major profits for the economy and allowed strangers to pay and be involved with Victoria's torture, but isn't that also immoral too? Just for those people to pay money to watch her be tortured. Before the reveal of the terrible person Victoria is, the audience felt sympathy for her because she was a victim, but now most of us don't feel that way anymore. PS, It really reminded me of the movie, The Purge, when they came out in weird masks chasing her down the street.

I do not see it her as innocent in any way and but that does not make me any less sympathetic because of the amount of punishment they put her through. To me this "punishment" does not aid or help people that continue doing so,is immoral what they are doing and thank you for pointing that out.
