Sometimes, one may not be happy with their life. They may have thoughts about what they should have done in life and can't help but to feel like their life isn't as good as they think it is. Angela fits in this category of people. In the documentary "Catfish," we are introduced to a man named Nev as he goes on his journey for the truth. We see the real connection that Nev builds with this family online, especially with a woman named Megan. However, those feelings are questioned when suspicion is brought on from "Megan's" strange behavior and occasional slip-ups.
First, some things in this documentary really stuck out to me. In fact, I was actually able to pinpoint most of the far-fetched claims that were being made before Nev did. With the paintings that were sent to Nev, I had a hard time believing that an eight year old girl painted them. The artwork had no real childlike feel. Also, when Nev was explaining some of things that Megan dabbles in, I felt like she was too perfect. It seems like this "Megan" character had few if not any flaws at all. Since flaws are what makes us who we are, I naturally questioned the truth in "Megan's" words. Overall, over-exaggerating is not the way to go when you want to "fake it until you make it."
One question stayed on my mind after watching this film. Should I feel sorry for Angela, Nev, or the both of them? Truthfully, I felt like I couldn't really decide at first because of Angela's explanation. She seemed like she was genuinely sad about her life and was genuinely unhappy. Nonetheless, that does not give her an excuse to hurt someone else emotionally. It may not have been intentional, but Angela indirectly disregarded Nev's feelings in order for her to feel better about herself. All in all, I only feel sorry for Nev because of the emotional he had to endure.
To conclude, this documentary can be used as a lesson for every person in the world. Everyone goes through hardship in life and has emotional downfalls. This does not give us a reason to make others miserable, too. In order to find true happiness, one needs to find happiness in themselves. If you spend your time looking in the wrong places, the good feeling is only temporary. Hopefully, Angela knows this now.
