Two Faced? More Like Fifteen

Now-a-days when we hear the word “Catfish” mentioned we automatically think of it as someone pretending to be someone they are not for their own ulterior motives. However, in this case the term “Catfish” refers to a documentary that follows Nev and Angela’s story- one lived over the internet. The documentary “Catfish” follows Nev as he develops a friendship with Abby, an 8-year-old artist, over Facebook. She contacts him after seeing one of his pictures and later sending him a replicated painting of it. Their friendship is completely innocent and harmless until other “family members” come into the picture.  Megan, Abby’s 19-year-old sister, develops a romantic relationship with Nev despite never meeting in person. Nev is star stuck by a beautiful girl who seems to be so talented in the art of singing. Things go south when Nev realizes that the tunes Megan has sent him belong to other online artist, and after confronting her she denies the truth.  While on a business trip Nev and his two friends venture close to where Abby lives and decide to visit the family. Their main objective is to know how much of a truth or lie they have been told. First stop, Megan’s ranch, which truly belongs to no one and the mail Nev has sent is found in the mailbox. The following morning Nev surprises them at family breakfast and the semi truth comes out.
I can understand Angela pretending that her paintings belong to her daughter. She wanted the attention that she might’ve not gotten had everyone known that they belonged to her. What I don’t understand was her need to pretend to be Megan. She could’ve maintained a friendly relationship with Nev without inventing another person. To top it off, when she had the opportunity to tell the truth she chooses to lie again and say that Megan was in rehab. Which, go figure, she was not and the entire time it was her pretending to be Megan. Megan’s character was played by a stranger who lived in Canada with her family. In building a believable story Angela created a total of 15 Facebook profiles and somehow managed to maintain all of them.  Personally, the hardest thing for me to understand was Angela lying about having cancer. After everything she continued to lie even when she had the opportunity to come clean, basically adding salt to an open wound.

I agree with you Maria, I think it was wrong of her to lie about her health and invent a person to have a fake relationship with Nev. The fact that she stole someone else's identity and then keep lying to Nev.

I agree that if she wanted to keep it friendly, then she should have never invented Megan.

I believe she introduced Megan into the problem for the same reason she called her own paintings Abby's. She wanted Nev to be interested, and just as she knew her paintings would be better receipted if under a different name, she did the same with a relationship. But still pretty weird overall.
