Was Justice Truly Served?

I believe that the White Rabbit episode was even more disturbing than the last Black Mirror episode we watched with Asher. This episode was all about getting justice on the criminals who tortured, kidnapped, raped, and filmed a little girl's murder. However, how this society dealt with this particular crime and the punishment of the criminals was not just to me at all. Yes, it was awful for what the couple did. But I believe the male of the couple was the main person who constructed this crime. We, the audience, do not have enough information to tell if Vanessa was forced to film the crime or not. But the man got out of the same punishment as his girlfriend by killing himself in jail. I do believe that if this crime was not so publicized the White Rabbit camp would not exist. The fact that the crime was so publicized is why the punishment is so cruel and in front of an audience. The way Vanessa was treated was inhumane. She was repeated electrocuted, mentally tortured, and feared for her life for 18 days. The way this society is living is by the code of Hammurabi "an eye for an eye."She was not even the one who did the worst of the crime but got the worst punishment. She would have been better of killing herself like her boyfriend or given the death penalty. The only positive outcome of this punishment is that no one would ever do that specific crime ever again. This punishment has put the fear of God in the entire society. The one thing is I truly wonder if they are going to stop torturing her. How long is the punishment going to last? Is she going to one day return to society? I personally do not believe she will be able to return to society because the human brain would be to far damaged to do so. Also it is like putting a lab rat or domesticated wild animal back into the wild. She would not be the same person, she was. She would not know how to return to society because she spent so long being in fear and electrocuted. I am glad that society does not follow Hammurabi's Code still because I do believe society would look just like White Rabbit camp and people would be returned from those camps almost in a vegetable state.

Autumn, I completely agree!! I think that if one day she was able to return to society, her brain physically and mentally would be so messed up it would probably be a major struggle for her to even function and do basic thing in a day to day life. And she could never live a normal life because everyone knows what she did and will never treat her as she was treated before, even if she successfully went through a proper rehabilitation. I really like how you incorporated Hammurabi's Code! :)

I agree with the fact that the publicity of and entertainment that Victoria's torture is for these people is inhumane. I think you made an excellent point and observation that she was not the one who did the worst of the crime, but got the worst of the punishment. Victoria was a bystander -- just like all of the people who film her torture with their cameras.
